Valentin Grüner develops unique bond with wild lioness in Botswana
Valentin Grüner, a German man originally from the Lake Constance region, has gained international social media attention for his unique bond with Sirga, a 180-kilogram lioness in the Kalahari.
Grüner rescued Sirga 14 years ago when she was a two-week-old cub abandoned by her mother while he was working on a private wildlife farm in Botswana. Although he raised her by hand, Grüner emphasizes that he never intended to domesticate her or train her. His goal was to allow her to live as wild as possible.
Today, Sirga lives in a large nature reserve in Botswana that Grüner leased as part of the Modisa Wildlife Project. She roams an area of approximately 20 square kilometers and is monitored via a GPS collar. While she lives a wild life and hunts instinctually, she continues to display affection toward Grüner, often treating him as part of her pride.
