Germany: 27% of households have no savings, survey shows

A recent ING survey of German consumers reveals that 27 % of respondents have no financial reserves, up from 23.5 % a year earlier. The study attributes the shortfall primarily to limited disposable income and rising living costs, with about half of participants saying they earn too little to set aside money and one‑fifth pointing to high expenses for rent, energy and food. Lack of a modest emergency fund is linked to increased financial stress, sleep disturbances and a higher risk of debt when unexpected costs arise. While Germany’s overall wealth is high, the distribution of free‑spending income is uneven, leaving many households unable to meet the recommended safety net of two to three months' salary. Experts advise building reserves gradually, even in small regular amounts, to protect against unforeseen expenses.
