Germany addresses EV charging accessibility and urban infrastructure

In Germany, discussions regarding electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure are focusing on both accessibility and innovative urban integration. Current charging stations often face criticism for lacking barrier-free designs. Issues such as high curbs, narrow charging bays, and poorly placed bollards make many existing stations inaccessible to wheelchair users. While a national guideline for accessible charging infrastructure was introduced in 2023, a binding standard is still missing. There is ongoing debate regarding whether charging stations should be legally classified as self-service terminals under the Act to Strengthen Accessibility (BFSG), which implements the European Accessibility Act.

In Saarbrücken, the SPD political group has proposed a pilot project to implement charging curbs as a space-saving alternative to traditional charging stations. This technology integrates charging electronics directly into the curb, potentially reducing the need for bulky sidewalk installations. The proposal aims to support the city's goal of creating a comprehensive charging network to accommodate the growing number of registered electric vehicles in the region.
