Germany addresses urban rat infestations in Blomberg and Hamburg
Various regions in Germany are addressing rat infestations in urban and public spaces. In Blomberg, local authorities have issued guidance to residents to minimize food sources and hiding spots, such as unsecured compost heaps, pet food, and unsealed trash bins. While the city conducts biannual pest control in the sewage system, officials emphasize that property owners are responsible for managing infestations on private land.
In Hamburg, the situation has escalated at the Elbkinder daycare center in Steilshoop. The facility's management reported that rats have moved from the surrounding area into the daycare's grounds and buildings, affecting a center that cares for over 200 children daily. Although professional pest control measures are currently underway, the daycare association is calling for political intervention to address the underlying causes of the infestation.
