Germany reforms social welfare system with new Grundsicherungsgeld
Germany is undergoing a fundamental restructuring of its social welfare system. As of July 1, 2026, the former 'Bürgergeld' has been transitioned into 'Grundsicherungsgeld' (basic security allowance) for job seekers.
Regarding future payments, the standard rate for 2027 remains undecided. While a new calculation based on updated consumption data is expected to take effect on January 1, 2027, a proposed change to the calculation method—which would remove a step accounting for recent price increases—could result in lower adjustments for both job seekers and pensioners. The Bundestag Budget Committee is scheduled to hold a public hearing on the 2027 Budget Accompanying Act on October 12, 2026.
The reform also introduces stricter sanctions. Under the new regulations, failing to attend three consecutive appointments at a Jobcenter can lead to the complete termination of benefits, including housing costs, due to a legal presumption of unreachability. This represents a significant increase in severity compared to the previous system, where missed appointments typically resulted in a 10 percent reduction of the standard rate.
