Germany advances biodiversity protection with constitutional lawsuit and community tree‑pruning event

A constitutional complaint filed by the Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz Deutschland (BUND) and other plaintiffs seeks a binding, constitution‑based plan to halt biodiversity loss across Germany, invoking Article 20a of the German Basic Law. The complaint, submitted in October 2024, builds on a 2021 Federal Constitutional Court decision on climate protection and calls for stronger legal safeguards for ecosystems, soils, water and species.

Meanwhile, on 21 November 2026 a volunteer “Kopfweiden‑Schnitt” will be held in Spenge, North Rhine‑Westphalia. Organized by the local nature group Biologische Station Ravensberg together with BUND, the Waldjugend and others, participants will prune ancient linden trees in the Füllenbruch nature reserve to preserve habitats for insects, birds such as field sparrows and tawny owls, and bats. The free event runs from 09:30 to 12:30 and aims to engage the community in hands‑on conservation.

Both initiatives underscore a growing push in Germany to protect natural habitats through legal measures and grassroots action.
