Germany advances Bundeswehr digital radio project

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has announced that the digital radio transition for the army is progressing following previous technical difficulties. After real-world deployment tests and meetings with industry representatives in Berlin, Pistorius stated, “The system works.”

The multi-billion euro project, known as Digitalization of Land-Based Operations (D-LBO), aims to create a continuous digital command and information system for land forces. The goal is to network soldiers, vehicles, and command posts to allow the real-time exchange of situational maps, position data, and orders.

Industry leaders, including KNDS Germany head Florian Hohenwarter, confirmed that the project remains on schedule to equip a division with D-LBO technology by 2027, covering approximately 10,000 vehicles. This supports Germany's commitment to NATO to provide a combat-ready brigade. General Inspector Carsten Breuer noted that testing is currently underway on Leopard, Puma, and Marder armored vehicles.
