Germany advances genomic medicine and spatial diagnostics
The Berlin Institute of Health (BIH) at Charité has launched the Spatial Diagnostics Platform to integrate 3D microscopy, sequencing, spatial protein analysis, and laboratory automation. The platform aims to combine molecular analysis with spatial information to better understand how cells interact within tissues, which is critical for diagnosing cancer, complex inflammatory diseases, and rare genetic conditions. Key industry partners involved in the initiative include Roche Diagnostics, Zeiss, Bruker Daltonics, Hamilton Germany, and LIMAA Technologies. The first research projects are expected to commence in 2028.
Separately, the German Society for Human Genetics (GfH) has highlighted the success of Germany's genome sequencing model project. According to GfH President Markus Nöthen, Germany has established a robust structure for genomic medicine that remains competitive within the European context. The framework includes standardized consent processes, mandatory case conferences, a national data platform, and legally anchored evaluations. The GfH emphasizes that the interdisciplinary cooperation developed between university clinics is essential for translating sequence data into actionable diagnoses and treatment decisions.
