Germany advances municipal heat planning and energy transition expertise

In Germany, municipal heat planning is becoming a central component of the national energy transition. Under the Heat Planning Act (WPG), all municipalities are required to develop plans to achieve climate-neutral heat supply by 2045. These plans involve analyzing heat demand, renewable energy potential, and developing target scenarios for district heating networks versus individual solutions like heat pumps.

In the community of Börnsen, the company AR Climate Positive presented a final heat plan. The strategy includes a 10 percent bioenergy mix for public use by 2029, with a complete transition to renewable energy by 2040. The plan specifies that district heating expansion is limited to central areas, while heat pump usage is expected to rise to approximately 65 percent by 2040.

In a related development within the energy sector, BMU Energy Consulting GmbH, a spin-off from the University of Wuppertal, has been awarded the Wuppertal Business Award in the category of ‘Best Young Company 2026’. The company specializes in supporting municipalities and energy providers with the complex infrastructure planning required for the energy transition.
