Germany advances renewable energy with new solar farm, biogas plant and waste‑to‑energy project

The shipping company AG Reederei Norden‑Frisia has commissioned a 608‑kilowatt peak free‑field photovoltaic system on a 10,000‑square‑metre site near Norddeich. The FAB corporate group together with partners HERECON Projekt GmbH and WABIO Technologie GmbH is planning a large‑scale biogas plant in Beeskow. The 60‑megawatt facility will cover about eight hectares and is expected to generate enough electricity for roughly 50,000‑60,000 households. Construction is slated to begin in the second half of 2027.

Hamburg’s new waste‑to‑energy centre – the Zentrum für Ressourcen und Energie (ZRE) at the Volkspark – is experiencing significant delays and cost overruns. An external review flagged that the original budget of €450 million has risen to over €534 million and the 2025 completion target is no longer achievable. The plant is intended to provide up to 75 megawatts of district‑heat in winter and up to 22 megawatts of electricity in summer.
