Germany advises 7,000‑10,000 daily steps and 5‑minute exercise snacks

Health experts in Germany recommend walking between 7,000 and 10,000 steps each day as an effective target for weight loss. Gradually increasing step counts and integrating walking into everyday activities, such as shopping or commuting, can boost calorie burn and metabolism while avoiding over‑use injuries. Monitoring progress with a pulse meter is suggested for consistent results.

A meta‑analysis published in the British Medical Journal examined data from 11 studies involving 414 mostly inactive adults. Participants performed short “exercise snacks” of up to five minutes, twice daily, such as stair climbing or leg‑strength exercises. Even these brief bouts produced measurable improvements in cardiovascular fitness and endurance, though muscle strength and blood markers showed little change. About 83 % of participants reported establishing a routine, highlighting the practicality of brief activity intervals for those who struggle to meet WHO recommendations of 300 minutes of moderate exercise per week.
