Germany advises egg cartons and layering to curb organic waste bin odors in summer
German household guidance recommends using a layering method to reduce summer odors from organic waste bins. Cover kitchen waste with dry plant material such as grass clippings, twigs, or potting soil, and wrap leftovers in newspaper, recycling kitchen paper, or an uncoated paper bag. Avoid bioplastic bags, which decompose slowly and may be mistaken for regular plastic during collection.
Additional tips include lining the bin bottom with absorbent materials like egg cartons, newspaper, or twig clippings to soak up moisture, and placing the bin in a cool, shaded location. For maggot control, a diluted solution of vinegar essence (half a bottle of vinegar essence mixed with three to six liters of water) can be sprayed inside the bin to kill larvae quickly. The advice also suggests disposing of fish and meat waste in residual trash rather than the organic bin to prevent rapid decay and fly breeding.
