Germany: AfD political influence and voter motivations

Recent discussions in Germany have highlighted different facets of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party's influence and support. Controversy has emerged regarding the Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes, a prestigious scholarship foundation, following reports that AfD politician Hans-Thomas Tillschneider was a former scholar. The situation has sparked debate over whether intellectual excellence in academic circles is being judged by political alignment.

Separately, sociological research by Martin Schröder suggests that concerns regarding immigration are the primary driver for AfD voter support. Schröder’s findings indicate that immigration anxiety explains approximately 75 percent of the explainable differences in AfD support and about 90 percent of reported voting behavior. His study concludes that economic factors, such as income, education, or perceived social disadvantage, are not the decisive motivators for the party's rise.
