Germany agricultural diesel tax relief applications decline

Applications for agricultural diesel tax relief in Germany have seen a notable decline. According to customs data, the number of applications fell from 165,975 in the 2021 fiscal year to 136,628 in 2024, representing a decrease of approximately 18 percent.

The German Farmers' Association (Deutscher Bauernverband) has warned against interpreting this decline as a sign of reduced need for the relief. Instead, the association attributes the drop to political measures and bureaucratic hurdles. Specifically, they cite the gradual reduction of tax relief over the past two years and the high administrative effort required for applications, which may be particularly burdensome for smaller farms compared to larger operations that can better standardize accounting and personnel processes.
