Germany Agriculture Minister warns of high suicide rates among farmers

German Federal Minister of Agriculture Alois Rainer (CSU) has issued a warning regarding disproportionately high suicide rates among farmers in Germany. According to Rainer, the suicide rate in the agricultural sector is “three times higher than in the general population.”

He identified several contributing factors to this crisis, including excessive bureaucracy, climate change, the loss of various crop protection agents, and a decline in trust toward political institutions. Economic instability is also a major driver, with Rainer noting that approximately one in three farmers faces liquidity problems.

Other psychological and social factors mentioned include the pressure faced by young successors when implementing changes on farms and a sense of shame that prevents individuals from seeking help. Rainer observed that men may be more prone to these issues due to a sense of pride, whereas women may be more robust and quicker to seek assistance. In response to these findings, the Ministry of Agriculture has announced an investigation into the underlying causes of these high suicide rates.
