Germany alerts travelers to customs limits on souvenirs

German authorities remind vacationers that items bought abroad may be subject to customs duties and import restrictions. Within the EU, most personal‑use goods are duty‑free, but duty‑free purchases must be declared and exceedance of alcohol, coffee or tobacco allowances can trigger additional taxes. For non‑EU destinations such as Turkey, Egypt, Thailand, the United States or Switzerland, the total value of goods may not exceed €430 per person by air or sea and €300 by land; children under 15 have a €175 limit.

Environmental regulations also apply. Many natural souvenirs – seeds, plants, soil, sand, shells or stones – can spread invasive species or pathogens and are often prohibited or require phytosanitary certificates. Animal products like meat, cheese, milk and honey are tightly controlled because they can transmit livestock diseases. Travelers are urged to check both customs and ecological rules before packing souvenirs to avoid fines, confiscation or ecological harm.
