Germany allocates €500 billion special fund to municipal infrastructure

The German federal government has approved a €500 billion special fund to finance infrastructure and climate projects, with €100 billion earmarked for states and municipalities. In the town of Kernen im Remstal, near Stuttgart, the fund is being used for a new sports hall and a €9 million school renovation, a site visited by CDU deputy secretary‑general and Bundestag member Christina Stumpp, who said she was showing how the fund reaches the local level.

Mayor Benedikt Paulowitsch (SPD) highlighted the town’s aging facilities and stressed that the federal money allows planned upgrades without the municipality taking on new debt. However, critics warn that the broad discretion given to regions could lead to the funds being used to plug budget holes rather than solely for new projects. In Waiblingen, mayor Sebastian Wolf (CDU) pointed to long‑delayed infrastructure repairs that may now be addressed with the special‑fund resources.
