Germany announces funding and reforms for agricultural automation

The German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMLEH) has announced a funding initiative of up to 9.5 million euros to support research and development in agricultural robotics and automation. Scheduled from 2027 to 2030, these non-repayable grants aim to advance autonomous machinery, drones, and human-robot cooperation to address labor shortages and climate challenges.

In a separate regulatory development, the German government has modernized the training requirements for farmers. Effective August 1, 2027, the new training ordinance will integrate mandatory subjects such as digitalization, data protection, sustainability, and consumer communication into the three-year curriculum. The final examination will also expand from two to five distinct areas.

Additionally, technological integration is expanding into the craft sector. New software is being introduced in the Ruhr region to help small businesses and artisans implement robotic processes more efficiently, bridging the gap between industrial-scale automation and the flexible needs of small-scale operations.
