Germany allows LPG tank filling at public gas stations
Owners of motorhomes and caravans in Germany can now refill their liquid gas tank bottles at public gas stations using autogas. This change follows the update to the Technical Rule for Operational Safety (TRBS 3151), which was announced by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs and published in the Joint Ministerial Gazette on October 20, 2026.
To qualify for refueling, the gas tanks must be installed according to the requirements of the DVGW working paper G 607. Key safety requirements include a secure attachment with a sealed connection within the tank compartment that allows for tool-free removal. Additionally, the filling connection must be accessible from the outside, and the filling line must not run through the living area of the vehicle. The system must also be equipped with an automatic filling stop and a safety valve.
Markus Lau of the German Liquid Gas Association (DVFG) noted that this regulation closes a previous legal gap, as the G 607 rule previously only covered safe installation, while the new TRBS 3151 now regulates the actual refueling process.
