Germany and Austria announce renovation and heating subsidies
Germany and Austria are implementing new subsidy programs to promote energy-efficient building renovations and heating system upgrades.
In Germany, the federal government has announced a 500 million euro package for heating replacements and thermal renovations, with applications opening on November 2, 2026. The funding is divided into 321 million euros for thermal renovations and 179 million euros for replacing old oil and gas heating systems. This shift emphasizes building envelopes and overall efficiency to accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels.
In Austria, the government has outlined the framework for a 2027 renovation offensive. Supported by the SPÖ, the initiative aims to assist hundreds of thousands of people in making homes more climate-friendly and efficient. The program, led by Finance Minister Markus Marterbauer, focuses on thermal renovations and switching to climate-friendly heating systems. Additionally, future funding may include measures for shading and greening to mitigate heat impacts.
