Germany and Austria Expand Police Cybercrime Training Programs

The Police of Rhineland‑Palatinate in Germany will launch a 13‑month qualification course on IT and economic crime starting 1 June 2027. The program, aimed at university graduates with at least one year of relevant experience, prepares participants for direct entry as criminal (senior) commissioners. It responds to a rise in cybercrime cases in the state, which increased from 3,660 in 2022 to 4,376 in 2023.

In Austria, the Ministry of the Interior is implementing a criminal‑service reform that includes the creation of nine Cybercrime Training Centers. Three centers in Upper Austria, Carinthia and Burgenland are already fully operational, with the others under construction. The reform has added more than 250 new jobs in fields such as crime scene work, IT forensics and crime prevention. In 2025, Austrian authorities recorded 63,459 cybercrime offenses, with a clearance rate of 30.8 %. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner and Ministerial Councillor Markus Haindl highlighted the need for continuous training to keep law‑enforcement personnel up to date on cyber threats.
