Germany and Austria implement new road safety measures

Authorities in Germany and Austria are implementing various measures to improve road safety and manage traffic flow. In Germany, the German Automobile Club (ADAC) has issued reminders regarding the mandatory creation of emergency corridors, known as ‘Rettungsgasse’. Drivers must create these lanes as soon as traffic begins to slow down to allow ambulances, fire trucks, and police vehicles to pass. Failure to comply can result in fines of up to 320 euros, two penalty points, and a one-month driving ban.

Additionally, cities such as Berlin, Düsseldorf, and Karlsruhe, along with various locations in Austria, have introduced yellow circle markings on roads. Designed using principles of traffic psychology, these high-visibility markings aim to alert drivers to upcoming changes, encouraging them to lift their feet from the accelerator and reduce speed without the need for new signage or speed limits. Early data from Austria indicates that these markings have successfully reduced vehicle speeds by 2 to 3 kilometers per hour in certain areas.
