Forestry experts in Germany and Austria implement climate adaptation strategies
Forestry experts and officials in Germany and Austria are implementing diverse strategies to combat the effects of climate change on woodland ecosystems.
In Germany, author and forester Peter Wohlleben warns that coniferous monocultures increase the risk of future forest fires. He advocates for the expansion of national parks and the promotion of natural deciduous forests, arguing that letting nature recover on its own is the most effective method. He notes that planted trees often have shallower root systems compared to those that develop naturally from seeds.
In Bavaria, Forestry Minister Michaela Kaniber reported a doubling in attempts to plant new tree species through a state-funded program. This 'citizen science' initiative supports landowners in testing climate-resilient species such as Atlas cedar, Lebanon cedar, and various oak varieties to ensure long-term forest stability.
In Austria, the 'Cedrus4Clim' project, involving the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna, is testing different ecotypes of the Lebanon cedar. By planting these across various climate gradients in Upper Austria, Lower Austria, and Burgenland, researchers aim to identify which varieties are best suited to withstand changing environmental conditions.
