Germany and EU climate policies insufficient to meet Paris Agreement goals

An analysis by the Berlin-based think tank Energy Watch Group suggests that current climate policies in Germany and the European Union are insufficient to meet the goals of the 2015 Paris Agreement. While the targets aim to limit global warming to 1.5 to 2 degrees Celsius, the report notes that 1.5 degrees of warming has already been permanently reached.

To keep warming significantly below 2 degrees Celsius, the report argues that fossil fuel investments must cease immediately and greenhouse gas emissions in industrialized nations must reach net zero by approximately 2037. In contrast, German and EU climate targets aim for net zero by 2045 and 2050, respectively, which the study claims fails to meet the necessary requirements for a stable climate.

Additionally, historical perspectives on the energy transition highlight its evolution from a niche environmental movement to a significant economic factor. Since 2011, the political and economic landscape has shifted, with renewable energy now viewed by the German government as a potential driver for international market expansion and export growth.
