Germany and Google launch initiative to combat AI historical forgeries

German Culture Minister Wolfram Weimer and Google.org have partnered to launch the Global Authentic Memory Initiative (GAMI). The project aims to protect digital historical assets in archives, museums, and memorials from being falsified by generative artificial intelligence.

The German Federal Ministry of Culture is providing 100,000 euros in funding, while Google.org is contributing 300,000 euros. GAMI will utilize a vendor-neutral technical solution to verify the authenticity of historical documents using digital fingerprints, encryption technology, timestamps, and institutional signatures.

The initiative responds to concerns raised by Nazi memorial sites regarding the 'liar’s dividend,' where generative AI could lead to real historical documents being dismissed as fakes or synthetic fabrications being accepted as fact. The project is led by the Bavarian startup Authentic Memory gUG, a spin-off from the Technical University of Munich and the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich.
