Germany and Italy clash over EU migration pact implementation

Tensions are escalating between Germany and Italy over the implementation of the new Common European Asylum System (CEAS). Germany has accused Italy of undermining the EU migration pact amid disputes regarding the repatriation of rejected asylum seekers and Mediterranean sea rescue operations.

Conflict has intensified following Italy's decision to detain the Sea-Watch 5, an NGO vessel flying a German flag, for 45 days. Italian authorities allege the vessel violated rescue procedures by not handing migrants over to Libyan authorities as required. In response, Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi suggested that if migrants are rescued by German-flagged vessels, Germany should take responsibility for them and bring them to a German port.

These disagreements follow recent instability at EU borders, including a situation in Ceuta where tens of thousands of people crossed illegally from Morocco, leading to humanitarian crises and strained relations between Spain and other EU members. Critics, including former federal police officer Jan Solwyn, argue that the current systemic approach is failing to address these border vulnerabilities.
