Germany and regional powers call for negotiations with Iran
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has called for Iran to engage in negotiations to address regional tensions, specifically urging a cessation of conflicts in Yemen and Ukraine. During an eight-nation meeting in Istanbul involving ministers from France, the UK, Italy, Turkey, Egypt, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia, Wadephul emphasized the need for Iran to demonstrate a serious will for diplomatic solutions and move away from maximalist demands.
The discussions focused on securing maritime shipping routes in the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, the Strait of Hormuz, and the Black Sea. While regional actors including Egypt, Turkey, Iraq, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia are encouraging Iran to resume talks ahead of the US midterm elections, significant obstacles remain. These include US demands for concessions regarding Iran’s nuclear program and Iranian requirements for the lifting of maritime blockades, the release of frozen assets, and permission to sell oil.
In response to recent diplomatic pressures, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that there are no longer any red lines for the country. He noted that previous military actions by the US and Israel would be met with significant consequences.
