Germany and Russia signal potential shifts in diplomatic and energy relations

German political and diplomatic circles are seeing shifts in engagement with Russia. Kirill Dmitriev, a close associate of Vladimir Putin and head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, expressed interest in resuming energy cooperation with Berlin. Responding to comments by AfD co-chairman Tino Chrupalla, Dmitriev stated that Russia and Germany could jointly reopen the Nord Stream pipelines, describing the AfD as a voice for German energy sovereignty and prosperity.

Separately, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov during the UN General Assembly, marking the first such meeting since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Wadephul defended the decision to reopen communication channels, citing the need to address the drone incident at Leipzig airport and responding to requests from the Global South to secure grain exports via a Black Sea ceasefire to prevent famine.
