Germany and Senegal strengthen long-standing diplomatic and cultural ties

Germany and Senegal have maintained diplomatic relations since 1960, evolving from an intellectual and cultural connection into a diverse partnership involving industry, energy, and vocational training. This historical bond was influenced by figures such as Léo Frobenius, whose work on intuitive reason resonated with former Senegalese President Léopold Sédar Senghor. Senghor’s appreciation for German culture even led to the establishment of a German languages and civilizations department at the University of Dakar in 1973.

On a local level, the French city of Cherbourg-en-Cotentin facilitates international connections through various twinning arrangements and associations. The city maintains official ties with Bremerhaven and Northeim in Germany, as well as Poole in England. Additionally, Cherbourg maintains institutional relations with Coubalan in Senegal and fosters community-level exchanges, such as sporting events and cultural visits between German and French municipalities.
