Germany and the Netherlands assume NATO command in the Baltic eastern flank
German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius and his Dutch counterpart attended a ceremony in the border city of Valga/Valka, where the 1st German‑Netherlands Corps (1 GNC) transferred tactical command of NATO land forces in Estonia and Latvia. The handover, effective 1 July 2026, creates a second NATO headquarters on the alliance’s eastern flank, replacing the previous Polish command.
The multinational corps, based in Münster, rotates command between Germany and the Netherlands and can direct up to 50 000 troops, drawing personnel from 14 other NATO members. Established in 1995, the corps’ new role is presented as a concrete step toward greater European defence responsibility and deterrence amid heightened Russian threat in the region. Pistorius said, “Wir sind bereit, größere Verantwortung für Europas Sicherheit zu übernehmen.”
