Germany and Ukraine establish strategic military and industrial alliance

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has strengthened military support for Ukraine through a new 1 billion euro assistance package and industrial agreements exceeding 6 billion euros. During an official visit to Kyiv, Merz and Ukrainian officials established agreements to supply air defense missiles, radars, and interceptors specifically designed to counter Russian jet drones. The partnership aims to transition from emergency aid toward long-term joint military production.

The visit occurred amidst Russian aerial bombardments targeting critical infrastructure and logistics routes near the Dnieper River. While the Ukrainian government expressed openness to future diplomatic dialogue mediated by international actors, Merz emphasized that European stability depends on curbing Russian military and hybrid operations.

Domestically, the aid has drawn sharp criticism from Sahra Wagenknecht, leader of the BSW party. Wagenknecht argued that the German government is prioritizing foreign military spending while imposing domestic cuts to pensions, healthcare, and family assistance during an economic and energy crisis. She called for an immediate end to taxpayer-funded aid to Ukraine, citing rising fuel prices and the high cost of replacing Russian gas.
