Volvo Cars announces 2,500 job cuts following third-quarter loss

Volvo Cars has announced a plan to cut approximately 2,500 jobs globally, primarily in Sweden, following a significant third-quarter operating loss. The automaker reported an operating loss of 5.6 billion Swedish kronor, a sharp decline from the 6.4 billion kronor profit recorded during the same period last year.

CEO Håkan Samuelsson attributed the disappointing results to deteriorating market conditions in China and the United States. In China, revenue fell by nearly 50% due to intense competition from local brands, while in the U.S., margins were pressured by tariffs and the removal of electric vehicle incentives.

The company aims to reduce annual expenses by an additional 5 billion Swedish kronor through the termination of consultant contracts, natural attrition, and voluntary severance packages. These measures are expected to be fully implemented by the end of 2027. Despite the restructuring, Volvo plans to launch 13 new models by 2030 to bolster its long-term competitiveness.
