Germany announces new financial aid for agricultural sector

The German federal government has announced new financial aid measures for the agricultural sector to combat the effects of extreme drought, high costs, and low producer prices. Federal Agriculture Minister Alois Rainer has proposed several forms of support, including 60 million euros to be distributed without application processes to offset rising fertilizer and diesel costs, as well as additional 700 million euros in direct payments.

Bavarian Agriculture Minister Michaela Kaniber welcomed the decision, stating that the aid provides a vital signal to farmers facing economic uncertainty. She noted that the measures, which include support for multi-hazard insurance and tax relief, are essential for helping farms prepare for future crises.

However, the aid has faced criticism regarding its distribution and efficiency. Critics argue that while social benefits like housing allowance face cuts, agricultural subsidies are being expanded with less oversight. Concerns have been raised that some large agricultural enterprises receive significant state aid despite having substantial assets, and that the criteria for receiving low-interest loans lack strict requirements for proving financial hardship.
