Germany appoints von Schnurbein as new antisemitism commissioner
The German federal government has appointed political scientist von Schnurbein as the new commissioner for combating antisemitism. She succeeds diplomat Felix Klein, who held the position for eight years before moving to a role at the OECD in Paris.
Upon assuming her duties on October 28, von Schnurbein described the fight against antisemitism as an “active defense of our democracy.” She emphasized the necessity of clearly identifying antisemitism in all its forms, regardless of whether it originates from the political right, the left, or Islamism.
Federal Minister of the Interior Alexander Dobrindt described the 53-year-old as a “proven expert in the fight against antisemitism,” noting her strong connections and respect within the Jewish community. Von Schnurbein brings extensive experience to the role, having held various positions within the European Commission since 2002.
