Germany passes 'Frühstartrente' law for childhood pension savings

The German Bundestag has passed the 'Frühstartrente' (Early Start Pension) law, a measure designed to encourage long-term private pension savings starting from childhood. Scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2027, the program provides a monthly state contribution of 10 euros for children aged six to 18. The initiative specifically targets children born in 2020 or later, with retroactive payments for those born in 2020 beginning in 2026.

To promote early financial engagement, the program also includes a one-time 200 euro bonus for individuals under the age of 25 who begin their pension savings early. While the state contribution is fixed, families can supplement these accounts with private contributions of up to 6,840 euros annually.

The legislation has faced criticism from opposition parties, such as the Greens and Die Linke, who argue it creates a two-tier system by favoring wealthier families who can afford additional contributions. Meanwhile, broader pension reforms are also underway, with discussions regarding the transition from disability pensions to old-age pensions and potential changes to retirement ages for various age cohorts.
