Germany approves ‘Frühstartrente’ monthly pension for children

The German federal cabinet has approved the ‘Frühstartrente’ (early start pension), a new initiative designed to provide children and adolescents with capital for private retirement savings. Under the plan, the state will automatically deposit 10 euros per month into a provision depot for every child and youth between the ages of 6 and 18.

Proponents of the measure, including Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil and Member of Parliament Michael Brand, state that the goal is to promote equal opportunity and prevent old-age poverty by decoupling wealth accumulation from a person's parental background. While the state contribution alone could result in a depot value of approximately 2,200 euros by age 18, the program allows parents or grandparents to supplement the savings with additional contributions of up to 6,840 euros per year.

Model calculations suggest that with interest and additional monthly contributions, the accumulated capital could grow significantly by retirement age. Furthermore, the cabinet approved a structural reform of child and youth welfare services, which aims to increase efficiency and reduce costs for municipalities through debureaucratization, with expected savings of over 1.3 billion euros by 2036.
