Germany approves regulatory relief for organic farmers
The German Bundestag has passed legislation to provide relief for organic farms regarding Good Agricultural and Environmental Condition (GLÖZ) standards. Certified organic operations, or those in the process of transitioning, will automatically meet several requirements, including standards for permanent grassland maintenance, crop rotation, and soil erosion prevention.
Under the new rules, farms with up to 30 hectares of agricultural land are exempt from specific crop rotation requirements. Additionally, if permanent grassland is converted into paludiculture (wetland agriculture), no replacement land is required. The law also allows for exemptions from certain obligations in cases of plant diseases or pest infestations.
Agriculture Minister Alois Rainer indicated that further efforts to reduce bureaucracy for livestock farmers are forthcoming. While Green Party spokesperson Dr. Ophelia Nick welcomed the reduction in redundant documentation for approximately 36,700 organic farms, she cautioned against conflating administrative simplification with the removal of essential environmental protections.
