Germany asylum appeal processes see increased duration

After several years of declining processing times, the duration of legal appeals against decisions made by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (Bamf) has begun to increase again in Germany. According to data from the federal government, court proceedings for asylum appeals averaged 15.3 months in the first half of this year, up from 14.3 months in the previous year.

There are significant regional disparities across German states. Saxony reported the longest average processing time at 20.4 months, followed closely by Lower Saxony at 20 months. In contrast, proceedings in Rhineland-Palatinate averaged 9.2 months and Bavaria averaged 10.7 months.

The federal government cites an increase in the number of asylum appeals and the complexity of situations in countries of origin as contributing factors. Specifically, high volumes of appeals from individuals from Turkey and Venezuela have been noted, with Saxony seeing a high number of Venezuelan claimants.
