Asylum applications in the EU, Switzerland, and Norway fell by 17% in the first half of 2026, reaching approximately 332,000 requests. This marks the lowest level recorded since 2021. The European Union Asylum Agency (EUAA) attributes this decline to factors including the political transition in Syria and increased cooperation between the EU and transit countries.

France recorded the highest number of applications with 69,000, followed by Italy (66,000), Spain (55,000), and Germany (55,000). These four nations accounted for roughly three-quarters of all applications. Greece saw the highest number of applications per capita, with one request for every 400 residents.

Among nationalities, Afghans remained the largest group with 39,000 applications, despite a 7% decrease from the previous year. Venezuelan applications dropped by nearly one-third to 33,000, with 93% of those requests filed in Spain. Conversely, applications from Bangladeshi nationals rose by 13% to 20,000. The first-degree international protection recognition rate in the EU was 31% during this period.
