Germany attracts international students with tuition-free university programs

Germany has become a major destination for international students, with 160,306 international students enrolled out of a total of 379,900 in the 2023-24 academic year. A primary draw is the availability of tuition-free education at most public universities for both bachelor’s and many master’s programs.

While tuition is often waived, students are typically required to pay a semester contribution ranging from €100 to €450, which often covers administrative costs and public transport. International students must also account for living expenses such as accommodation, food, health insurance, and residence permit costs. Non-EU students may be required to provide proof of sufficient funds to secure a student visa.

Admission to competitive programs often requires a bachelor’s degree with a high CGPA, sometimes reaching 8.5 or higher at elite institutions like the Technical University of Munich or RWTH Aachen. Language proficiency is also a key requirement; English-taught programs generally necessitate IELTS scores of at least 6.5 or TOEFL scores between 80-90, while German-taught programs require C1 level certification.
