Germany blames Russia for attempted drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport
The German government has officially blamed Russia for an attempted drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport on August 4, 2026. An explosive-laden drone, carrying 600 grams of military explosives, was discovered near Ukrainian Antonov cargo aircraft. Investigators believe the device failed to detonate due to a faulty detonator, narrowly avoiding a catastrophe.
In response to this incident and a broader campaign of hybrid threats, Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt raised the national threat level from 'abstract' to 'high'. The government has announced several retaliatory measures, including the closure of the Russian consulate in Bonn and the Russian House of Science and Culture in Berlin.
To bolster domestic security, Germany is planning to expand its defense capabilities against hybrid warfare. This includes the deployment of mobile anti-drone units in strategic cities, the establishment of a national 'Cyberdome' to combat cyberattacks, and granting private companies operating critical infrastructure expanded authority to actively defend against unauthorized drone activity.
