Germany awards Excellence University status to several institutions

Germany has announced new recipients for the prestigious ‘Excellence University’ status under the federal and state Excellence Strategy. The decision, announced by Federal Research Minister Dorothee Bär and Science Minister Falko Mohrs, grants significant annual funding to several institutions and university alliances to bolster top-tier research.

Individual universities receiving the title include the University of Freiburg, the University of Jena, and the University of Cologne. These institutions can receive up to 15 million euros in annual funding. Additionally, two university alliances were selected: the Rhein-Main alliance (comprising TU Darmstadt, Goethe University Frankfurt, and Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz) and the ‘Ruhr Innovation Lab’ (comprising TU Dortmund and the University of Bochum). These alliances are eligible for up to 28 million euros in annual funding.

The selection process focused on scientific vision and international competitiveness. While several institutions were successful, others, including the University of Hannover and the University of Kiel, did not receive the designation. The Excellence status is subject to review every seven years to ensure continued research excellence.
