Serhii Kuznetsov on trial in Germany for Nord Stream sabotage

A trial has commenced at the Hamburg Higher Regional Court in Germany against Serhii Kuznetsov, a 50-year-old former Ukrainian military officer accused of orchestrating the 2022 sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipelines. Prosecutors allege that Kuznetsov led a specialized team, including professional divers, an explosives expert, and a boat skipper, to plant military-grade explosives on the seabed near the Danish island of Bornholm.

The indictment claims the group used a chartered sailing yacht named Andromeda to reach the site and utilized timer-controlled explosives to damage the infrastructure. German prosecutors have charged Kuznetsov with complicity in war crimes, asserting that the attack on civilian energy infrastructure was a deliberate attempt to disrupt gas supplies and deprive Russia of energy revenues.

Kuznetsov, who was arrested in Italy in August 2025 and extradited to Germany in November 2025, denies all involvement in the explosions. The Ukrainian government has also denied any official role in the incident. The legal proceedings are expected to continue into early 2027, amid significant geopolitical sensitivity regarding the impact on European energy security and international relations.
