Germany: Benefits and rights for people with disabilities

In Germany, approximately 7.8 million people live with a recognized degree of disability (GdB) of 50 or higher. Many individuals with invisible chronic illnesses, such as diabetes, migraines, depression, or endometriosis, may be eligible for legal recognition and financial benefits without realizing it.

A GdB of 50 grants several rights and advantages, including a tax allowance (Behinderten-Pauschbetrag) of 1,140 euros per year, which reduces taxable income. It also provides specific protections in the workplace, such as additional vacation days and protection against dismissal. Furthermore, it can impact eligibility for special old-age pensions.

Even at lower levels, such as a GdB of 20, individuals may qualify for a tax allowance of 384 euros. Legal recognition is based on the duration and extent of physical, mental, or sensory impairments that hinder social participation for more than six months, regardless of whether the condition is visible.
