Germany boosts social housing with €200 million for Saxony and nationwide funding

The Saxony state government will receive €199.3 million for social housing in 2026, allowing the construction of about 740 new affordable units in Dresden and Leipzig and the modernization of roughly 1,600 existing apartments across the state. Funding comes primarily from federal sources (about three‑quarters) with the remainder contributed by the state, and State Minister Regina Kraushaar highlighted the measure as an incentive for investors and a response to demographic trends.

At the national level, Germany has set aside €18.15 billion for social housing projects through 2027 and allocated an additional €1 billion to a "Junges Wohnen" program aimed at students and apprentices. Reforms to the housing benefit system now cover two million households, increase benefit amounts, and introduce climate‑related components. The government also implemented heating cost subsidies and redistributed CO₂ pricing to lessen the burden on low‑income renters.
