Germany braces for one of its busiest road days ahead of Fronleichnam holiday

The German automobile club ADAC warned that the Wednesday before the Fronleichnam holiday (June 3) will be among the traffic‑heaviest days of the year. Early‑afternoon congestion is expected on many autobahns, with peak crowding lasting into the evening and remaining strong on Thursday morning. The surge is driven by the end of school holidays in Baden‑Württemberg and Bavaria, combined with a large number of short‑trip travellers from Baden‑Württemberg, Bavaria, North Rhine‑Westphalia, Hesse, Rhineland‑Palatinate and Saarland. Around 1,000 ongoing roadworks and the Rock am Ring and Rock im Park festivals add further delays.

ADAC and the Auto Club Europe anticipate the busiest stretches on major routes such as the A 1, A 3, A 5, A 7, A 8 and A 9, especially in the Rhine‑Rur, Rhine‑Main, Rhine‑Neckar, Stuttgart and Munich regions. The weekend will see heightened congestion on north‑bound return routes from the Alps. Parallel traffic problems are forecast for neighbouring Austria (West‑Autobahn, Brenner‑A13, Tauern‑A10), Switzerland (Gotthard‑A2, San‑Bernardino‑A13) and Italy (Brenner‑A22, Milan‑Genoa links), with border controls potentially adding waiting times.
