Germany braces for water conflicts, launches national low‑water information system

Federal Environment Minister Carsten Schneider warned that Germany will face serious water conflicts as heatwaves and drought intensify. He noted that about 80 municipalities have already issued emergency water‑use restrictions, limiting drinking‑water extraction and irrigation. Industries such as semiconductor producer Infineon, which relies heavily on water, are also vulnerable.

On the same day the ministry launched Niwis, a public, nationwide low‑water information platform that provides real‑time data on river and reservoir levels. The system aims to improve transparency and help manage growing water demand from agriculture, water‑intensive industries, data‑center cooling and hydrogen production. Schneider cited limited understanding of future water needs as a key challenge.

Similar water‑conservation measures have been introduced in parts of Ireland, France, Italy, Switzerland and Bavaria, underscoring a broader European trend of tightening water usage amid climate change.
