Germany Building Energy Act causes high renovation costs
The Building Energy Act (Gebäudeenergiegesetz, GEG) in Germany is creating significant financial burdens for property owners during renovations. According to a report regarding a high-rise building in Reinfeld, Schleswig-Holstein, the law mandates that if more than ten percent of a building's exterior shell is renovated, the entire structure must be brought up to current energy efficiency and fire safety standards.
In the case of the Reinfeld residential building, which dates back to the 1970s, necessary repairs to dilapidated balconies and walkways triggered these requirements. This resulted in massive costs, including a projected 110,000 Euro renovation bill for a single apartment owner, illustrating the economic impact of environmental bureaucracy on individual homeowners.
