Germany calls Gaza humanitarian situation 'catastrophic

The German government has described the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip as 'catastrophic,' emphasizing the urgent need for improved aid supplies. In a response to an inquiry by the Left Party parliamentary group, German officials stated they are in continuous contact with relevant authorities to facilitate the delivery of essential goods.

Efforts to improve aid access include addressing customs hurdles and restrictions on dual-use materials. Germany is specifically advocating for the entry of items such as gasoline, engine oils, and waterproof tents. While aid volumes have seen a relative increase since the October 2025 ceasefire, the German government noted, citing United Nations data, that the ability of non-governmental organizations to access the territory has declined due to new Israeli restrictions implemented in September.

Germany has allocated approximately 420 million euros in humanitarian aid since October 7, 2023, positioning itself as one of the largest bilateral donors. The government linked sustainable humanitarian improvement to the implementation of the Gaza peace plan, which includes the rehabilitation of civilian infrastructure.
