Germany car insurance type classes updated by GDV

The German Insurance Association (GDV) has released its annual recalculation of insurance type classes, which affects the premiums for motor liability and casco insurance policies. These classes are based on the number of regulated damages associated with specific car models.

According to the GDV, approximately 12.4 million vehicles in Germany will receive a new type class. Of these, 7.4 million vehicles will see a higher classification, potentially leading to increased premiums, while 5.1 million vehicles will receive a lower classification, which may result in lower costs. For about 30 million vehicles, or roughly 71 percent of the total, the type class remains unchanged from the previous year.

The GDV has published non-binding statistics for approximately 33,750 car models. This data allows current owners to check their specific model and helps prospective buyers identify which vehicles are more or less expensive to insure.
